Have you heard of WWOOFing? It stands for WorldWide Opportunities on Organic Farms. It’s a fantastic program that connects farms with folks who are curious about farming, homesteading and living rurally. You help out for 20 hours per week and receive room and board in return. I’ve WWOOFed in Italy, Mexico, and all over the US and for me, it’s like a working vacation — help a farm family out with a project in the morning and then after lunch and a nap, have the rest of the day to explore, read a book, take a walk or visit a local restaurant or attraction.
If that sounds fun to you, come WWOOF with us for a week or two this summer!
April and July are already full, but May-June and August-October are also great times to come hang out on the farm and pitch in. We ask for about 20 hour of help per week and in exchange we host you in a guest room in our home, provide all your meals, and treat you to fun outings to local Spring Grove and Decorah gems like Luna Valley Farm for pizzas nights, Fat Pat’s for Friday night bbq, local festivals like Syttende Mai and Uffda Fest, and much more. Oh yeah, and you’ll have access to our SAUNAS!
Just a few of the tasks you’d be helping us with this season:
All things GOATS! We’ll have a couple dozen goats on the farm for brush management and meat again this season. Tasks could include daily chores, helping us round them up to trim hooves, swap out NoFence batteries (we use a virtual fencing system!), cutting saplings down for them to feast on, and more.
Invasive species management in our silvopasture. (You’ll sleep SO well after 4 hours of pulling garlic mustard and cutting buckthorn and honeysuckle so that native vegetation can thrive!)
Planting new perennials for seed and tending to our year old plantings of hollyhocks and milkweed.
FIREWOOD! Have you experienced the joy of using a hydraulic log splitter? You’re in for a treat.
Fermentation projects when the veggies are ready from our veg farmer friends — Nick has a killer kimchi recipe and we’re working on upping our sauerkraut game
Planting and tending to new and existing bb trees in our valley
So much more!
You don’t have to have any previous farming experience, just a good attitude and a willingness to learn. Folks who have spent time on our farm have come from all walks of life and it’s been a joy to get to know each one of them. (If you’re reading this, former WWOOFer, come back for a visit!! xoxo)
Check out our WWOOF host profile and don’t hesitate to reach out with questions.
Feel free to share this with someone in your life who could use a break from the city. :)
All the best,
Dayna
